Appliqué Digitizing Services

Appliqué uses fabric instead of dense thread to fill in a design — which is why you'll see it on varsity jackets, team jerseys, and big lettering where solid stitching would feel heavy or stiff. We digitize the placement lines, tackdown stitch, and finishing border separately, so the fabric sits flat and lines up exactly where it should.

How Appliqué Digitizing Works

Unlike standard embroidery, an appliqué file isn't just one continuous stitch-out — it's built in stages. First, a placement line shows where to lay the fabric. Then a tackdown stitch holds it down before the excess is trimmed away. Finally, a border stitch (usually satin) finishes the edge. We build each stage so it lines up correctly on your machine, without gaps or fabric shifting mid-stitch.

What's Built Into Every Appliqué File:

  • Placement stitch to guide fabric positioning
  • Tackdown stitch to secure fabric before trimming
  • Clean, even satin border to finish the edge
  • Stitch sequencing that accounts for fabric trimming steps

Best Suited For

Appliqué works especially well for large lettering, team names, and bold designs where solid embroidery would sit too thick or stiff on the fabric. It's a common choice for athletic wear and varsity-style pieces where a lighter feel matters as much as how it looks.

  • Team names and jersey numbers
  • Varsity jackets and letterman patches
  • Large lettering and bold typography
  • Multi-fabric layered designs

Frequently Asked Questions

What fabric works best for appliqué?

Twill and felt are the most common choices since they hold an edge well after trimming, but we can digitize for most stable fabrics — let us know what you're using.

Can appliqué be combined with regular embroidery?

Yes — it's common to pair an appliqué letter or number with embroidered detail, shading, or an outline on top.

Does appliqué cost more than regular embroidery digitizing?

Usually, yes — the placement, tackdown, and border stages take more setup than a single continuous stitch-out.

Can you digitize appliqué with multiple fabric colors in one design?

Yes, multi-fabric designs are possible — they're quoted individually since each fabric piece adds a placement and tackdown stage.
